The 47-year-old, who's been married to Faith Hill for more than 17 years, explained, "When your wife tells you it's gone too far, that's a big wake-up call. That, and realizing you're gonna lose everything you have. Not monetarily, not career-wise, but family-wise."
McGraw also ditched his demons for the sake of his three daughters, Gracie, 17, Maggie, 15, and Audrey, 12. "It got to the point where my kids were getting older, and it was way past the point that they noticed it," he shared. "And I noticed that they noticed. That's enough to straighten you out."
The singer admitted he saw himself heading down the same path as the late country singer Keith Whitley, who died from alcohol poisoning in 1989. "Keith Whitley taught me how demons can overtake you if you let 'em," he said. "And I was headed down that path. You feel like you're supposed to be 'on' all the time. Then you drink and get onstage, and all of a sudden you feel confident and powerful."
He continued, "It becomes a habit. Up until seven years ago, there were not a lot of shows that I didn't have something in my system."
Now that the family man
has kicked those habits to the curb, he's gearing up for his summer tour
and the release of his new album, Sundown Heaven Town. Check out the video to hear what else Tim had to say about his drug and alcohol use and be sure to tune in to The Insider With Yahoo on TV tonight for the latest in entertainment news.
